As part of an effort to build greater financial strength, American Apparel (asi/35297) announced Friday that it successfully completed refinancing of its secured debt. The Counselor Top 40 supplier recently closed a private offering of the $206 million principal amount of its 13% senior secured notes due in 2020. It also entered into a new $35 million five-year asset-backed revolving credit deal with Capital One Bank. American Apparel used the net proceeds from the offering of notes, together with borrowings from the new credit line, to repay and terminate its prior credit facilities with Lion Capital LLC and Crystal Financial LLC.

Under the five-year agreement with Capital One, first lien borrowing costs will be significantly reduced – one of a number of financial advantages for the Los Angeles-based manufacturer of fashion basics. “Our new debt arrangements, coupled with improved financial performance, will provide added flexibility in delivering upon our operating plan for 2013 and beyond,” said Dov Charney, American Apparel’s chairman and CEO. “This financing effort will allow us to further focus our efforts in driving profitability for the benefit of all our stakeholders.”

After talk of bankruptcy circulated around the supplier in 2011 following an $86 million loss in 2010, American Apparel has orchestrated a steady rebound in its operations. While the company’s overall revenues have also grown, its performance specifically in the North American ad specialty market showed marked improvement: revenue increased 7.3% to nearly $97 million. That gain followed a 2011 in which sales rose 1.8% to $90.2 million.

•         Is more likely to incorporate a gaming component (up six percentage points)

The average merchandise/noncash incentive program in the fall of 2012:
•         Will be positively affected by the economy (50%)
•         Will have increased merchandise award values (36%)
•         Will offer more gift cards (31%)
•         Will include these types of rewards: Electronics (79%), Golf Items (68%), Luggage (66%) and Housewares (62%)

Buoyed by positive economic signals and a better lending climate, half of U.S. small-business owners are planning to make investments in the second quarter of this year, according to the latest Scorecard survey released by firm SurePayroll. The investments, data shows, will likely come in the areas of new staff, technology and marketing as companies look to expand sales and boost their efficiency.

The SurePayroll survey also showed business owners are increasingly hopeful about selling and the overall economy. Nearly 70% of respondents were optimistic in their economic outlook in March, up from 59% in February. About 80% of small-business owners say the first quarter either matched or exceeded their expectations and roughly 50% expect results in Q2 to surpass gains made in Q1.

Despite a positive national employment trend, SurePayroll’s survey results indicate that hiring and paycheck numbers are not improving dramatically, however. Last month, data showed hiring fell 0.2% and paychecks dipped 0.1%, with particular weakness in cities such as Boston, Denver and Las Vegas. Many small-business owners say they’re still facing tepid consumer demand and they worry about the effects of higher taxes and the rising cost of health care.

A survey of leading marketing executives predicts that digital ad spending budgets will increase about 9% in 2013, according to data published by research firm Gartner, Inc. Already, for larger firms, digital marketing spending averages 2.5% of total revenues, a figure that’s been increasing in recent years. As a point of reference, Gartner stats showed companies spent 10.4% of their 2012 revenue on overall marketing activities, like advertising research, agency costs and software as a service.

“Digital advertising accounts for the largest share of digital marketing budgets at 12.5%, while content creation and management account for the second-largest share,” said Laura McLellan, research vice president at Gartner. “Marketers today are emphasizing the use of content marketing as part of a shift to drive more inbound marketing.”

According to respondents, commerce experiences will be a large budget focus this year, as marketers look to embed shopping tie-ins in digital marketing channels including search, social and mobile. The survey also showed that the overall marketing shift from traditional to digital has let firms save money, creating reinvestment opportunities. On average, nearly 30% of marketers have cut their traditional advertising budget to fund digital marketing activities.

Finally, while social media is gaining traction as a marketing tool, websites are still a main driver of success, marketers believe. “The survey results suggest that the corporate website will not be displaced anytime soon by a brand’s social media presence,” said Bill Gassman, research director at Gartner. “That’s all the more reason for marketing leaders to continuously invest in measuring and optimizing their websites through Web analytics and testing, paying attention to all aspects.”
