3 Things You Need to Know About National Small Business Week.

Running your own business can mean a lot of time on your own, in the trenches, building your company brick by brick, pushing the gears forward inch by inch. Next week, however, there are many opportunities for entrepreneurs to step back from the daily grind, connect with one another and be inspired.

That’s because the week of May 4 through May 8 is National Small Business Week (NSBW).

Organized by the Small Business Administration, this is the 52nd year in a row that the president of the United States has declared one week per year the official celebration of the Main Street entrepreneur.

“National Small Business Week is a chance to honor our nation’s 28 million small businesses and renew our commitment to fostering the entrepreneurial spirit that is central to the American experience,” says SBA Administrator Maria Contreras-Sweet, the head of the U.S. Small Business Administration, in a statement.

As part of the annual celebration, the SBA picks one Small Business Person of the Year who most exemplifies the determination and spirit of the small-business owner. Applicants for the honor have to be nominated — either by a business organization, professional trade group, another business owner, or themselves — and then they are then put through a tiered review process. Nominees are selected for their longevity, ability to withstand adversity, growth in employee headcount and contributions to the community.

One small-business owner is selected from each state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands. From that pool a group of six finalists is selected. This year’s finalist group will attend an event at the White House where one winner will be announced on Friday, May 8. Entrepreneur has been in touch with each finalists; all next week, we will be rolling out best advice, lessons and insider tips for entrepreneurs from these leading business owners.

Until then, here are three other things you should know about National Small Business Week:

The SBA Administrator will travel the country in a week. Every day next week, there will be a NSBW event in one of the following cities: Miami/Boca Raton, Los Angeles, San Antonio, New York and Washington, D.C. These regional city events include conversations with business leaders, like Office Depot CEO Roland Smith in Boca Raton, and opportunities to talk with SBA Administrator Maria Contreras-Sweet.

You can tune in from far away! If you can’t make it to the main five NSBW events, fret not, you can still benefit by watching the live stream that will be available on the SBA’s website at www.sba.gov.

Also, you can follow the NSBW events on social media. The theme for the week is “SBA: Dream Big, Start Small.” The twitter hashtag will be‪#‎DreamSmallBiz‬.

There is probably an event happening right in your backyard. The national events with the SBA administrator tend to take the show spotlight, but there are locally organized SBA events all throughout the country happening throughout the next couple of weeks.

For example, Small Business Week Eastern Missouri has a schedule of almost 20 different events next week, ranging from information sessions about how to get an SBA loan for your business and how to win a government contract bid to a SBA gala and networking event. And the Small Business Week San Francisco, which starts later in the month, on May 16, include events like, “Navigating the City Bureaucracy: Doing Business in San Francisco” and “How Facebook is Helping Achieve Your Business Goals.”

Bobbleheads Dominate MLB Promo Calendars

Bobblehead GiveawaysGarden gnomes, soap dispensers, fedoras and replica championship rings are just a few of the new promotional items MLB teams will give away at ballparks this season. Still, the promo product that remains the most collectible and universally popular in stadiums is the bobblehead. In fact, there are more than 130 bobblehead promotional nights scheduled at MLB parks in 2015, featuring replicas of current players, broadcasters and movie characters.

“We give away a bobblehead, it automatically becomes a sellout,” Rick Schlesinger, COO of the Milwaukee Brewers, recently told ESPN. “Every year we think we might have exhausted the bobblehead craze here in Wisconsin, and it doesn’t happen.”

For 2015, the Brewers have sold out multiple packages of promotional tickets – entitling fans to a bobblehead of Bob Uecker’s character from the film “Major League” and a bobblehead of catcher Jonathan Lucroy with a green light saber in his hand for “Star Wars” night. The Cincinnati Reds, meanwhile, have nine promotional bobblehead dates planned, and the Los Angeles Dodgers and St. Louis Cardinals each have eight. The Yankees are giving away four bobbleheads this year in the images of Masahiro Tanaka, Thurman Munson, Jacoby Ellsbury and Babe Ruth.

Bobblehead technology will also improve for 2015. The Brewers’ Uecker figurine has a chip in it that will belt out three phrases from “Major League” and the Cardinals’ Harry Caray bobblehead will also talk – a giveaway meant to honor the legendary voice of the rival Chicago Cubs.

The popularity of bobbleheads is far from a fad – plans were recently announced to open a National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum in Milwaukee. The museum will host bobblehead events, autograph signings and mascot appearances, and it will include a bobblehead-themed restaurant. Alternatively, as an ongoing display, the Miami Marlins have a collection of about 600 baseball bobbleheads inside Marlins Park.

If bobbleheads aren’t what you’re looking for, though, MLB teams are offering quite a list of distinctive giveaways this year. A few top picks: Hisashi Iwakuma bear hats (Mariners) on April 25; BBQ branding irons (Twins) on May 25; and Star Wars’ themed Death Star balls (Red Sox) on May 4 and R2D2 koozies (Nationals) on July 19.

Marketers Spending More on Promotional Products

12A recent study carried out by an independent research company on behalf of the British Promotional Merchandise Association details the recent increase in spending devoted to Promotional Products. Almost half of the marketers surveyed have increased their promotional spending budgets considerably since the last fiscal year. The survey reveals that 83% of senior marketers plan to increase or maintain their current spending on Promotional Products.

When top marketers were asked about the reasons why they utilize Promotional Products as part of their marketing campaign they said it is because it “targets customers effectively,” and because “the brand message lasts longer.” Most of the promotional merchandise purchased for give-away use at conferences, for “brand awareness and rebranding.” The top purchased Promotional Products marketers purchased were:

Survey: Mobile Marketing Is Underutilized

While 69% of U.S. small-business owners believe mobile marketing is critical to their company’s growth, the majority of them admit they’re failing to effectively leverage the technology, a survey released by Web.com Group shows. According to survey data, about 60% of small businesses have a website, but only 26% have a mobile-friendly (adjusted for smartphone screens) site, and only 14% have a stand-alone mobile site.

“With more and more consumers specifically searching for local businesses on their mobile devices, it is imperative that small businesses invest in a mobile presence,” said David Brown, chairman and chief executive officer of Web.com. “Having a mobile presence can be a huge competitive advantage for small businesses trying to attract local customers by instantly introducing a potential customer to their business’ products and services in a mobile-enhanced way.”

Last year, firm comScore reported that out of 234 million U.S. mobile consumers, 82.2 million use a smartphone, providing an obvious incentive for businesses to appeal to on-the-go consumers. With that in mind, 64% of small-business owners surveyed by Web.com said they planned to increase spending on mobile investments in 2012. How exactly small businesses will upgrade is not clear, though, as 61% currently don’t have a mobile search strategy. The biggest hurdle to more mobile investments is time, as data revealed 64% of small-business owners don’t have a dedicated marketing team.
